Call for VolunteersThe success of Earned Income Tax Credit projects throughout the nation is dependent on volunteers. People who are willing to donate a few hours for several weekends during tax season are needed to serve as tax preparers, screeners/greeters, language interpreters and quality reviewers. This is a good way for students to get the community service hours many schools require for graduation. Computer-savvy senior high students make great tax preparers, and younger students can help entertain the children who often accompany their parents to the VITA sites. While IRS training is required for the preparers and quality-review positions, the training is available online. Volunteers find the work rewarding. Elizabeth Colvin, director of Austin's Community Tax Center, said, "It's one of the only volunteer opportunities where you volunteer for a few hours, and the clients you're working with walk away with thousands of dollars, and you never had to open your checkbook." To participate in this worthwhile effort, contact your local tax coalition. |
