Fueling the Future: Critical Issues in Energy

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas hosted its signature event, Evening at the Fed, in December 2006 and January 2007. This series of dinner meetings for high school teachers is designed to inform educators on a timely and important issue so that they in turn can help their students understand the issue. The event provides opportunity for discussion and interaction with an economic expert. The meetings were held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Bank’s Dallas office and its branches in El Paso, Houston and San Antonio.

The dinner meetings featured an energy economist speaking about recent developments in energy markets and their effects on the regional, national and international economies.

The scheduled speaker was either Stephen P. A. Brown, director of energy economics and microeconomic policy analysis, or Mine K. Yücel, vice president and head of regional research at the Dallas Fed. They addressed such timely energy topics as:

  • What’s driving high and volatile oil prices?
  • How are world oil prices affected by:
    • resource scarcity?
    • resource development?
    • OPEC?
    • national oil companies?
  • What role is Middle Eastern production likely to have in the evolution of world oil markets?
  • How are market forces shaping natural gas prices? What about alternatives?
  • What effect are energy prices having on U.S. economic activity?
  • Does energy independence make economic sense?
