Partnering Colleges with Their CommunitiesThe U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) assists historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) with grants through the Office of University Partnerships. The office helps the HBCUs expand their role and effectiveness in addressing community development needs in their local regions. HUD grants are awarded to help revitalize neighborhoods and promote affordable housing near HBCU campuses. In 2010, Tennessee State University (TSU), which has a community similar to Prairie View, was a HUD grant recipient. With its $800,000 grant, TSU implemented the following programs:
This program is one of several initiatives administered by the Office of University Partnerships. Established in 1994, the office is a catalyst for partnering colleges and universities with their communities in an effort to address pressing local problems.
