Immigration and the Economy: Policy
Implications
The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas
will host a series of regional dinner meetings for high
school educators in December 2005 and January 2006.
Evening at the Fed will present information
on a very timely and important issue—immigration.
The meetings will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the
Bank’s Dallas office and its branches in Houston,
El Paso and San Antonio.
The dinner meetings will feature
Pia Orrenius, senior economist at the Federal Reserve
Bank of Dallas, speaking on
- the economic contributions of immigrants,
- economic and fiscal effects of immigration, and
- policy implications.
Join us for dinner and discussion
at a location convenient for you. There is no charge
for Evening at the Fed, but space is limited
and you must register to attend. Registration deadline
is Tuesday, Nov. 29, for the Dallas and Houston events;
Thursday, Jan. 5, for the El Paso event; and Wednesday,
Jan. 25, for the San Antonio event.

About the Speaker
Pia Orrenius is a senior economist
at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. As a labor economist,
she analyzes the regional economy, with special focus
on the border region. Orrenius’ research also
focuses on the causes and consequences of Mexico–U.S.
immigration and trade, illegal immigration and U.S.
immigration policy. Orrenius spent the 2004–05
academic year as a senior economist on the president’s
Council of Economic Advisers in Washington, D.C., where
she advised the Bush administration on labor, health
and immigration issues. Orrenius holds a Ph.D. in economics
from the University of California at Los Angeles and
B.A. degrees in economics and Spanish from the University
of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
