Dallas Fed to host biotech conference

For immediate release: March 28, 2002

DALLAS—The economic implications of the burgeoning biotechnology industry will be the topic of an April conference hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

Science & Cents: Exploring the Economics of Biotechnology will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 19, at the Dallas Fed and will feature nationally known speakers from the biotech, economics and venture capital arenas. The conference will offer an opportunity for participants to discover how deeply biotechnology issues will impact our future economy.

The biotech industry is garnering the interest of many companies and governments throughout the United States and the world. Currently, 41 states are pursuing economic initiatives to foster growth in their emerging biotech sectors.

Leading industry experts will address questions such as how biotechnology will affect productivity at the national level and in the health care industry as well as where biotech firms will locate. They will also discuss how biotechnology research will be financed and what legal and regulatory issues will confront this emerging industry.

Dallas Fed President Robert D. McTeer, Jr. will open the conference, and Rice University President Malcolm Gillis will be the keynote luncheon speaker. A full conference agenda and list of speakers are available at www.dallasfed.org/htm/dallas/events/biotech.html.

Individual conference registration is $149 through April 5 and $199 thereafter.
