Austin forum spotlights financial benefits of edcuation; Education Department official to speak

For immediate release: November 23, 2010

The financial benefits of education are the focus of an upcoming forum sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and the Texas Center for Education Policy at the University of Texas at Austin.

“The Education Equation Policy Forum” will be held 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at UT’S Etter-Harbin Alumni Center, 2110 San Jacinto Blvd.

Participants can register to attend at www.dallasfed.org.

Higher education is not only fundamental to the nation’s economic growth, but also to a person’s lifetime earnings, according to Richard W. Fisher, president and CEO of the Dallas Fed.

“In today’s economy, you earn what you learn,” Fisher said. “Spending time and money learning—in gathering knowledge and skills—remains one of the best investments you can make.”

Experts will examine issues such as closing gaps in minority participation, research and achievement; improving graduation rates and access to higher education; finding new ways to pay for education; and understanding factors that affect the value of higher education.

Martha Kanter, U.S. Undersecretary of Education, will speak at the forum.

Other speakers include Gregory Kienzl of the Institute for Higher Education Policy; Andrea Levere of the Corporation for Enterprise Development; Raymund Paredes of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; Gregory Vincent of UT Austin; and Kirk Watson, Texas State Senator.
