For immediate release: April 16, 2013

DALLAS—Exploring financial literacy and its impact in the areas of U.S.-Mexico trade, migration and development will serve as the backdrop for the upcoming “Financial Education and Economic Inclusion: The Immigrant Experience” forum sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Consulate General of Mexico and Financial Fitness Greater Dallas.

The free forum will be from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. April 22 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, 2200 N. Pearl St., and marks the international kickoff of Financial Literacy Week in the United States and Canada.

Participants—policymakers, scholars, organizations that work on financial education, the business and nonprofit community, and individuals and organizations interested in immigration policies—can register for the forum by April 19 at: http://www.dallasfed.org/cd/events/2013/13immigrant.cfm

Panel discussions will focus on several topics, including:

  • The Future of Remittances: Current Trends and the Impact on Economic Development
  • Migration and Entrepreneurship
  • Promoting Integration through Access to Financial Education and Services
  • Financial Literacy and Consumer Protection

“Immigrants in the United States have the opportunity to participate in our dynamic economy and build wealth,” said Alfreda Norman, Dallas Fed vice president and community development officer. “This forum will provide individuals and organizations with trusted resources they can use to help immigrants with financial literacy.”

Included among the forum’s diverse group of guest speakers is Pia Orrenius, assistant vice president of the Dallas Fed Research Department, Arnulfo Valdivia, Institute for Mexicans Abroad, and Mario Alberto di Costanzo, National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (CONDUSEF).
