The headline PCE price index posted an annualized rate of increase of 4.9 percent in February, its fastest one-month rate of increase since June 2009. That makes three straight months of headline readings in excess of annualized 3 percent. For those three months, the headline index has averaged an annualized 4 percent inflation rate. The index's 12-month rate climbed to 1.6 percent, from 1.2 percent in January.

For a second consecutive month, the headline PCE price index posted an annualized rate of increase in excess of 3.0 percent, coming in at 3.5 percent for January, following an annualized gain of 3.3 percent in December. Energy prices--particularly prices for gasoline and other motor fuel--accounted for much of the month-to-month increase in the index. In contrast to prior months, food prices also made a noticeable contribution to the headline rate in January.

Behind the Numbers: PCE Inflation Update, November 2010

After one of the tamest inflation months in recent memory--with the core PCE price index and the trimmed mean registering essentially zero inflation rates in October--both measures of underlying inflation bounced back to somewhat firmer levels in November. The core posted a 1.0 percent annualized rate in November, while the trimmed mean came in at an annualized 1.4 percent. The 12-month rates for each held steady at 0.8 percent.

Behind the Numbers: PCE Inflation Update, October 2010

Apart from yet another sharp increase in the price of gasoline, inflationary pressures in October were as muted as we've seen in quite some time. Both the core PCE price index and the trimmed mean registered essentially zero inflation rates in October, each posting annualized rates of just 0.1 percent.

As in July, a sharp increase in the price index for gasoline accounted for much of the strength in the August headline number. The 12-month headline rate held steady at 1.5 percent.
