U.S.–Mexico manufacturing subject of October 9 conference in El Paso

EL PASO—Industry experts and researchers will meet in El Paso to discuss opportunities and challenges for manufacturers in the United States and Mexico at a conference sponsored by the El Paso Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

“U.S.–Mexico Manufacturing: Back in the Race” will be from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Oct. 9 at the El Paso Marriott Hotel, 1600 Airway Boulevard. Media registration is required: Alexander Johnson, (214) 922-5288.

Participants can register online to attend the event. Admission is $109, with a reduced rate of $25 for students.

“A decade ago, experts said China’s industrial prowess would rule global manufacturing, but that hasn’t been the case,” said Roberto Coronado, assistant vice president in charge of the Dallas Fed’s El Paso Branch. “Participants at this conference will discuss innovations that have kept the U.S. and Mexico competitive in manufacturing.”

Conference panels will cover the current economic landscape for manufacturing in North America, automotive manufacturing, aerospace and medical manufacturing, and manufacturing along the U.S.–Mexico border.

Panelists will focus on trends including manufacturing clusters, next-shoring, just-in-time inventory and Mexico’s transition to high-skilled manufacturing. They also will discuss how Mexico’s energy reforms might benefit manufacturers.

“Our conference panels will also examine obstacles that could challenge competitiveness in the future, including skill gaps in manufacturing and rising business costs,” Coronado said.

Timothy J. Kehoe, University of Minnesota, will provide the keynote speech. Kehoe will address the economic prospects for manufacturing in Mexico in light of the recent reforms in that country, as well as fierce competition from China.

Additional information about the conference, including a complete list of confirmed speakers, can be found on the Dallas Fed’s website.
