Dallas Fed, HUD Conference to Shed Light on Issues Facing Southwest Border Colonias

Julián Castro to Keynote Event Highlighting Challenges in Region, Pathways to Change

EL PASO, Texas—Housing and sustainable development issues in the southwest border region are the focus of a conference being presented by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development June 22–23 in El Paso.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro is scheduled to give the keynote address at the “Southwest Border Colonias: Housing and Sustainable Development in the 21st Century” conference.

The border colonias represent one of the largest concentrations of poverty in the U.S. The conference will convene practitioners, policymakers, researchers and residents of the colonias to examine housing and sustainable development issues in the region and to promote international collaboration and solutions for persistent challenges.

Designated a Habitat III regional convening, the El Paso event will serve to inform the U.S. agenda for the international United Nations Habitat III Conference in October 2016.

The conference will also highlight the Dallas Fed’s 2015 report, “Las Colonias in the 21st Century: Progress Along the Texas–Mexico Border,” which examines successes and challenges in infrastructure, housing, economic opportunity, education and health in Texas border colonias.
