About Robert D. Hormats

Hormats is vice chairman of Kissinger Associates Inc., a New York-based international consulting firm that assesses and navigates emerging-market geopolitical and macroeconomic risk for its clients. He served in the U.S. State Department as under secretary of state for economic growth, energy and the environment from September 2009 to July 2013.

Hormats was vice chairman of Goldman Sachs International for 25 years before his appointment as under secretary. Earlier, he served as assistant secretary of state for economic and business affairs, ambassador and deputy U.S. trade representative, and senior deputy assistant secretary for economic and business affairs. He was a senior staff member for international economic affairs on the National Security Council from 1969 to 1977, serving as senior economic advisor to Henry Kissinger, Brent Scowcroft and Zbigniew Brzezinski.

Hormats also has been a visiting lecturer at Princeton University and served on the board of visitors at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and the dean’s council of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Economic Club of New York. His publications include The Price of Liberty: Paying for America's Wars and “Abraham Lincoln and the Global Economy” in Harvard Business Review.

Hormats earned a BA from Tufts and an MA and a PhD in international economics from the Fletcher School.
